Style

Style is:

  • the way a writer uses language
  • how the writer writes
  • the choice of words (vocabulary)
  • the use of figurative language
  • the way sentences and paragraphs are structured or arranged.

Literary style is like the clothes that a text wears. The basic information in a text is the body and how that information is presented is like the clothing. Style is how we 'dress' our information. Just as you can dress in several different styles, a text can be presented in different styles.

Standard Australian English "I will not go in there."
Informal using slang "There ain't no way you'll catch me in that place!"
Formal "You will not convince me to enter that establishment."
Verbose "I am afraid it would be a futile exercise to attempt to persuade me to enter into that institution".
Concise "I won't go in."
