Standard Australian English
You may be surprised to know that there can be different versions of one language. There are a number of versions of Australian English spoken in Australia. Standard Australian English (SAE) is the version of English used in formal, official or public situations such as schools, the media and the government.
You will already (know through general use and having been taught) many 'rules' of SAE spelling, grammar and pronunciation. Use the internet to help you research and create a list of some of these rules. Share it with a partner or the rest of your class.
Another version of Australian English is Aboriginal English. Here are some examples:
Us mob, unna? (Aren't we?)
Sitting and yarning.
Our country, proper long way.
Discuss with your classmates whether the new words you found in the previous activity would be considered Standard Australian English and suitable for use in more formal, official or public situations, or whether they would be considered slang and only suitable for less formal situations.
