Expressing a position

When we express our position (or point of view) we use particular vocabulary to express how definite we are about our opinion. We can be very certain or uncertain. This is called modality.

For example:

development might be harmful - development will probably be harmful - development will be harmful

1

The following paragraph expresses a definite point of view. Select words from the wordbank to express a less certain point of view. (You would also remove the 's' from the words 'destroys' and 'endangers'.)

Uncontrolled development destroys the habitats of sea turtles and endangers their survival. The construction of sea walls, jetties and tourist developments changes or destroys important feeding grounds and nesting sites.

Uncontrolled development might destroys the habitats of sea turtles and might endangers their survival. The construction of sea walls, jetties and tourist developments possibly changes or destroys important feeding grounds and nesting sites.

The modal words change the meaning of the paragraph; it now suggests that the statement is merely a possibility and that there is no conclusive evidence to support it.
