Referencing images

When you select an image as an example, or for analysis, you should accurately acknowledge its source. The source of the images used in this section is acknowledged on the copyright/disclaimer on the bottom of the left-hand menu. Some images on worksheets or information sheets are taken from different sources and these are referenced separately within this section.

One recommended way to reference pictures, images and photographs is outlined in the Harvard System of Referencing Guide as follows:

Artist/photographer's name, year of production, Title of image, [type of medium], collection details, collection name, document number, geographical location: name of library.

For example:

Lange, D. 1936, Migrant Mother, [photograph] Farm Security Administration Collection, LCUSF34-9095, Washington DC: The Library of Congress.

For an image from an electronic collection/source, include the web address as the collection details, eg available at: web address [Accessed date]

For example:
May, P. 1886, Mongolian Octopus, [print cartoon], available at:
http://www.dictionaryofsydney.org/files/wide/5c0cd4050d21b80771a869d6e8fb2d77728643d1
[Accessed 4th April 2013].

Take notice of the punctuation, capital letters, italics and brackets used in these examples; it is important to copy these accurately.
