Representations of different groups in society
It will be useful to have your visual codes information sheets handy for this activity.
Select one group. Think about how your chosen group is represented in newspapers, magazines, comics, cartoons or other sources of still images. Select a number of images which represent your chosen group. Respond to the following questions and record your observations in your journal.
State the group you have chosen.
- For each image:
- state the source from which you have copied the image (for example, name of magazine, newspaper, website address)
- describe what is included in the frame
- identify and state the codes used in the construction of each image; you can make notes onto the image (or annotate it)
- describe the effect the visual codes have on your reaction to the representation given.
- Do the representations present a positive or negative view of the person or people?
